                         answer key

Definitions:      photo interpretation- the act of examining photographic images for the purpose of identifying objects and judging their significance
land use- the way a piece of land is managed by humans

Lesson Plan:     (1) Print out the image of different land uses from the webpage.  Hand out to students.  Ask them to match the numbers with the letters that correctly correspond to the features.  The answer key is linked above for instructor use.

                        (2) Discuss how they identified the various features.  For example, how might land use associated with a mature pine stand differ from that of a hardwood stand?  Do they think they could tell the difference between an asphalt road and a concrete road?  If so, how?  If not, what other information would they need to discern the difference? Answer: the color, hue, brightness, or saturation.

                        (3) Ask the students what types of things would help them photo interpret differences between land use? Answers: a. size, b. shape, c. shadow, d. tone or color, e. texture, f. pattern, g. location or association with other features.
