Global Positioning Systems (GPS)

GPS has become a fixture in the tools of the asset manager, the GIS professional and the cartographer. Its ease of use has made it a very useful tool for data gathering. However, this characteristic can also allow errors to creep into the dataset. This class will discuss the proper use of GPS, the nature of its reliability and accuracy, how to plan a GPS data collection project, how to implement it, and how to assess accuracy of the results.

Topics Covered
  • Introduction to GPS
  • Code vs. Carrier Phase
  • Accuracy and Reliability
  • Differential Correction
  • Error Determination and Control
  • Mission and Planning
  • Hands-On Field Exercises
  • Base Station and Internet Data
  • Acquisition
  • Coordinate Systems and Projections
  • Exporting to GIS
